Traffic approval of the Autobahn BAB A8 Leonberg-Heimsheim

In September 2008 one of the largest construction sites in Baden-Wuerttemberg could be opened and approved for traffic: the extension of the A8 Autobahn between Leonberg and Heimsheim. Josef Rädlinger Bauunternehmen GmbH was responsible for the execution of the earth works in the three-year building time 2006 - 2008.

The A8 is an important section of the east-west Vienna-Paris connection with an overall length of 495 km, of which 160 km are in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The traffic loading, however, particularly the high heavy-duty traffic, made an extension to six drive lanes absolutely necessary. The new planning of the A8 had to satisfy many requirements, for example noise protection, as well as nature and environmental protection. The existing road was altered, where the axis of the main drive lane was improved in regard to length and height. Between the Autobahn intersection Leonberg and the Heimsheim exit, an extension of the A8 from  four to six lanes was implemented on 10 further kilometers. These extensions, including the edge and central strip, mean that the entire route now has a width of 35.5 m. The completion of the work on the building section between Leonberg and Heimsheim represents a milestone in the development of the A8 between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe.
