Christmas tree transport to Rome is ready to roll

Securely packaged and ready for the long journey, the 25 metre-high Christmas tree destined for Rome lies on Rädlinger's low-loader trailer. Every year at Christmas time, St Peter's Square in Rome boasts a large Christmas tree, donated by another European country. This year, the tree will come from the German-Czech border area. Transportation of the tree will be undertaken by the Rädlinger company group. In this, it is supporting the Trenck Festival Association in Waldmünchen, which is providing a large spruce tree and 60 small saplings from the Bavarian Forest.

On 27 November, the spruce weighing 7.2 tonnes was felled and packaged in a transport-secure manner. A transport crane helped to load the tree onto the Rädlinger Group's special 30 metre-long low-loader trailer. Specially designed anchoring brackets will ensure that the tree arrives safe and sound in Rome. On the day the tree was felled, however, the somewhat arduous route from the wooded area first needed to be navigated. The driver, Albert Mühlbauer, had his work cut out on the rough terrain and the narrow tracks. In view of the icy temperatures, the subsoil, at least, did not cause any problems and Mühlbauer was able to steer the heavy load skilfully from the wood to Waldmünchen.

On 1 December, the tree will be bidden a solemn farewell on the market square in Waldmünchen. On 2 December, the first day of the 1,200 km long journey, the convoy will also stop on the Nibelungen Bridge in Regensburg and on Odeon Square in Munich.
